Community Support
Abilities Plus provides a range of services to assist clients and families with needs that extend outside the walls of our main facility.
Respite The in-home Respite program provides caregivers of an individual with a disability needed time away from their regular routine, while leaving their loved ones in the care of a Respite worker trained to provide quality care to individuals with developmental disabilities. This service can be used for caregivers to run an errand, keep an appointment, visit family and friends, or simply enjoy some time alone. Respite also gives caregivers a break from round-the-clock responsibilities. Services are free to eligible families; however, hours available to enrolled families are determined by state funding.
Special Needs Day Camp This activity is offered every summer in conjunction with the Kewanee Park District. Two sessions are held for campers ages 6 through 21 years of age (provided the camper is still enrolled in school at the application deadline) and supervision is provided by staff from the Abilities Plus Respite Program and the Kewanee Park District. Each session has 10 openings, which are filled on a first come, first serve basis. This week long event consists of craft activities, snacks, educational sessions, swimming, and field trips. Interested campers must fill out an application, meet eligibility requirements, and provide their own transportation to and from camp, which is historically held at Windmont Park in Kewanee. Costs vary from year to year.
Visit the News page for information about the 2012
Day Camp.
Home-based Support Abilities Plus provides service facilitation for children and adults deemed eligible by the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS).
Special Olympics Abilities Plus adult clients are invited to participate in Special Olympics Track & Field. An agency staff member serves as the athletes' coach. Participants practice on Saturdays in the spring and qualifying athletes compete in regional and state competitions. Supervision during these events is provided by a team of volunteers. Athletes interested in participating in other Special Olympics sponsored events must orchestrate the details of their participation individually, but Abilities Plus is available to answer questions about the process.
Recreational Activities As a way to promote community integration, recreational activities are organized for our adult clients. Some of these activities include dances, outings to minor league baseball games, and Fall Fun Bowling Leagues in Geneseo and Kewanee.
Parents Club Abilities Plus welcomes all parents, guardians, family members, and caregivers of Abilities Plus clients to join our Parents Club. The Parents Club meets periodically throughout the year to voice their concerns, network, and support one another. These meetings are also attended by agency staff that answer questions and give updates about the agency. Details about previous meetings and upcoming events are posted on the News page.
