Adult Day Programs

Abilities Plus offers three day training programs for adults with disabilities.  Each program is designed to meet the needs of its participants; and together, the programs serve as a gradual progression toward independence.

Developmental Training
Developmental Training (DT) allows clients to work on life skills, personal goals, and A male client waits with his lifevest on while the tour guide prepares the boat at Camp Big Skydeveloping work skills.  The overall goal of the program is to increase an individual's independence while decreasing reliance on paid services.  This training takes place in a classroom environment and through "hands-on training."  Goals are set by the individual and his or her family with the guidance and suggestions of our DT instructors.  These goals are based on annual assessments.  In addition, DT focuses on community integration activities, seasonal celebrations, and community reciprocity.

Currently, work is underway to create a sensory room for individuals in DT.  This room can be used to stimulate, relax, calm, or energize an individual, simply by manipulating the equipment in the room.  Sensory stimulation theories have been explored as a way to enhance learning in individuals with disabilities, behavioral disorders, autism, and Alzheimer's; however, their benefits have been shown for everyone in the reduction of stress.

Work Services
Individuals who are more job ready benefit from the Work Services program.  This program focuses on job training and job-related goals.  Abilities Plus partners with local businesses to provide work experiences in our spacious on-site workshop for those individuals that express an interest in honing their job skills. Two clients work at a table and assemble small packages of parts for a local company

This partnership benefits the individual, the business, and Abilities Plus.  Businesses that recognize and utilize the skills and talents Abilities Plus clients possess can provide useful training to individuals with disabilities in their community while gaining a dedicated and conscientious work force that is passionate about the task at hand.

Currently, the Work Services program subcontracts with local businesses, such as BOMAG, Boss Manufacturing, Rhino Tool and Tyco Corporation, to provide services such as:
  -  assembling
  -  packaging
  -  collating
  -  janatorial work
  -  labeling
  -  shredding
  -  sorting

The Work Services staff is constantly seeking out new opportunities and training activities for clients.  If a business is interested in providing a new type of subcontract work to Work Services clients, they are encouraged to contact Abilities Plus for more details on a potential partnership.

Job Placement
After individuals develop a range of work-related skills and receive training on workplace etiquette, they may take advantage of the Placement program.  Abilities Plus has a staff member dedicated to helping clients find meaningful employment that fit their skills and interests.  This staff member assists with the job application process, including finding open employment opportunities, resume writing, and interview coaching.

Once on-site, this job coach works with the new employer and employee to ensure both parties are satisfied.  Businesses, such as Royal Oaks, Kewanee High School, Eagle Recycling, and Taco Bell have seen the benefits of working with the Placement program at Abilities Plus.
