Your home is not just a building with four walls. It's safe, comfortable, and welcoming. But for individuals with disabilities, a welcoming home must be accessible.
Recently, Abilities Plus opened a new community home for adults with developmental disabilities. This home will be accessible, regardless of the residents' needs. The new facility will have eight individual bedrooms, two living/recreational rooms, and an additional dining area. The facility is located at 808 E. 11th St., on the southwest corner of the Abilities Plus property (1100 N. East St.) in Kewanee, Illinois. The design of the home provides a high level of privacy for residents, as well as areas where individuals may visit with family and friends.
The new home allowed the agency to combine three rental properties into one 4,565 square foot, eight-bed group home. The project enabled the agency to take advantage of cost savings and provide a home that is secure, accessible, and comfortable for residents with varying disabilities.
The fundraising goal of $400,000 was set by the Abilities Plus Board of Directors and is designed to offset the total cost of the home, which is projected to cost over $900,000. Abilities Plus announced the success of its fundraising campaign at its annual awards dinner in October 2009.
We have received gifts from people who know the importance of this home. Our Board members, staff, families, and volunteers have already stepped forward to support the Bringing Home the Dream fundraising campaign. The group has collectively pledged over $67,000 to make this home a reality. In addition, other organizations in the area came forward and publicly supported our campaign. The Geneseo Foundation provided the lead gift of $60,000 in May 2008.
Despite the success, donations are still being accepted to continue to defray the cost of the project. We ask you to step forward and support the home of our dreams.
